The Mexican Authorities released a statement saying that three transgender people were killed. The Right’s Group is investigating two similar cases. Here,we can observe that the slayings have continued to repeatedly target the LGBTQ+ Community. According to local prosecutors, a transgender activist and politician, Samantha Gòmez Fonseca was shot several times and brutally killed in a car.
This incident took place in the South Of Mexico City. Several members of the LGBTQ+ community protested against the gruesome deaths of influential members of their community. This happened in Mexico City’s Main Freeway. “Samantha listen, we’re fighting for you” chanted 100 Protesters and carried signs reading “your hate speech kills”. Many people spray painted “trans lives matter” on the Mexico National Palace’s walls.
The victim intended to carry out a protest with other activists to spread awareness about the community and get more acceptance into the society. Unfortunately, she was murdered amidst the cause and her intended peaceful protest became a cry for help, justice and firmer laws and regulations. A 41-Year Old Trans woman stated that “We are scared, but with that fear we’re going to keep fighting.” The Gay and Transgender People are often attacked in Mexico.
Such gruesome attacks are performed to make the members of the LGBTQ+ Community aware that they are not respected, hailed and supported in their society. In the last six years, 513 Members of the community have been targeted and killed. Some believe that the killings are due to the ‘macho’ environment and extremely religious population. Some people believe that Fonseca’s death’s cause was the statement made by President Obrador in the previous week regarding a transgender congresswoman, he said “man dressed as a woman”.
When a person holds a position which comes with great responsibility such comments are unexpected and not acknowledged. Irrespective of religion and beliefs, every person should be respected and one should not be violated and killed for the way they express and identify themselves. We people are the society and we spread filth in it. We do not own other individuals and we cannot control what other individuals do. All we, the society can do is live in a harmonious environment, one where people are not being spoken to on the basis of their gender, race, religion and disability.
