Bryn Spejcher from California has been given probation and 100-hours of community service. She was involved in the involuntary manslaughter of her boyfriend about four years ago. Bryn was not sentenced to life in prison as findings suggested that she was “high on marijuana” and could not control her actions.
The 32-Year Old woman killed her 26-Year Old boyfriend, Chad O’ Melia under the influence and control of a “drug induced psychotic episode”. On May 27, 2018 she stabbed her boyfriend about 108 times in his apartment, Thousand Oaks, Calif. This happened a while after the couple smoked marijuana together. Allegedly, Bryn stabbed herself several times as well.
When the Police arrived at the scene, they found the accused drenched in blood. They used taser and baton to disarm her. During her trial, a medical expert explained the cause of the killing. It was a cannabis-induced psychosis where hallucinations reach a level where one cannot distinguish between reality and imagination.
The accused woman’s attorney claimed that she was intoxicated against her will and was bullied to smoke the drug. Bryn expressed her repentance and apologised to the victim’s family as she said “My actions have ripped your family apart…I am broken and aching inside. It hurts that you never see Chad again,”.
The victim’s brother expressed his anger and frustration over the lenient sentence given to Bryn as he said “It’s been five and a half years where she has got to live with her family and we get to live with a box of ashes,”. Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, several crimes have been committed. This case is no different yet minimal punishment was given considering the findings of the case and drug use. Is it fair?
