The new study study shows that sea Buckthorn Berries have essential antioxidants and could aid diabetes and obesity treatments.
According to the new study sea Buckthorn Berries which have been used as medicinal plants for centuries contain powerful antioxidants. The findings showed encouraging signs for the sea Buckthorn Berries for treating diabetes and obesity during in-vitro stage.
Harsh coastal environments in which sea Buckthorn Berries grows may cause them to produce more antioxidants in response to their environmental stressors.
Sea buckthorn joins a growing list of potent nutraceutical whose long held medicine value is being confirmed by morden science.
A new study from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada has indentified what maybe antioxidant powerhouse in a shrub that grows in coastal areas in Newfoundland.
The study assets the berries from the plant sea Buckthorn have unique nutritional characteristics that have the potential to treat diabetes and obesity.
This is not the first time sea buckthorn berries have been identified as having significant value of human health. The berries have been already popular in Asia and have also been used for treating arthritis and other inflammatory diseases in Europe.
The antioxidants in sea Buckthorn Berries inhibit or prevent damage cause to the body’s cells by free radicals. Free radicals are believe to be products of environmental and other stressors.
The srub berries and leaves have been widely used for supporting nutrition and have been use as pharmaceuticals.
Marine source of antioxidants:
Sea Buckthorn is a hardy, thorny, deciduous shrub typically thriving along the windswept coast line. There are numerous sea plants with strong antioxidants properties said Dr.Gupta including Rosemary and Lavender.
Routhenstein cited several more: “the young leaves of Hibiscus tiliaceus, Syzigium corymbosa, Calophylium inophylium and Colubina asiatica(commonly known as beach hibiscus), water apple and Asian snake wood respectively have been shown to provide antioxidant properties”.
‘I would think that the challanging condition under which coastal plants grow, such as high-salt-soil variable moisture and poor nutrient content probably increases oxidative stress in this plants” Dr.Menka Gupta said.
“This leads to an adaptation response by these plants leading to higher levels of antioxidants production” Dr. Gupta said, from which we may get benefitted.
“A few years ago I was surprised to see buckthorn berries growing wildly in Ladakh areas, India. Dr. Gupta recalled noting Ladakh is the highest plateau in the country”, sea Buckthorn is considered drought resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures “she said.
Health benefits of buckthorn berries: Due to their health benificial properties buckthorn berries was introduced in Europe in early 2000s. Preliminary research has suggested that time that these berries have vast commerical potential.
The plant’s oil is also a potent source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, polyphenols and vitamin E,B and A.
According to Dr.Menka Gupta , a functional medicine doctor with Nutra Nourish, not involved in the study , “sea buckthorn berries have been used for centuries as traditional medicines in Tibet, China and several other Asia and Europian countries “.
“The most documented used cases are for digestive health , stomach and intestinal problems, cardiovascular health and skin diseases and also in ulcers” Said Dr. Gupta.
“These play role in their potential effects on diabetic cells by reducing oxidative damage and inflammation, potentially improving insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism”Routhenstein explained.
Similarly by combating with obesity these dietary fibers and antioxidants helps in mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation, supporting metabolic health and weight management.
