An Indian of Indian origin got banned from Princeton University and also got arrested for taking part in the Pro-Palestine Protest. To protest against the Israel-Hamas war, many major university students in the US came across.
On Thursday, an Indian-origin student who was identified as Achinthya Sivalingam got arrested and also banned from US Princeton University when she participated in a disallowed student-led pro-Palestine encampment protest in the campus area. The incident took place during the ongoing protests at major universities all over the US against the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Sivalinga is a resident of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and was brought up in Columbus, Ohio. According to a report by the protest organisers, it was informed that yesterday she was arrested with another student named Hasan Sayed.
As per the report, on Thursday morning, the protest started its journey when students raised tents in the university’s McCosh Courtyard. Which clearly goes against the rules set by the authorities of the university. Both Sivalingam and Sayed were detained within a short time. According to the further report, after demolishing the tents, they continued a sit-in demonstration even after the arrests. The Princeton Alumni Weekly reported that by Thursday afternoon, a sit-in arrangement had been made for 100 persons and hollowed out to around 300 persons who were participating in the demonstration.
Jennifer Morrill stated that, after repeated warnings from the Department of Public Safety to cease activity and vacate the area, they have been immediately barred from the campus, pending a disciplinary process. She further added that no force was used by public safety officers during the arrests, which were conducted without resistance. Max Weiss, Associate Professor of History at Princeton University, talked about the students at the protest venue: Long live the solidarity, brilliance, and fearlessness of these brave Princeton students who put their bodies, privileges, and safety on the line when Palestinians are being subjected to unimaginable violence.
