Anish Ahmed, the Betalghat police station in-charge, stated that eight people died on the spot when the pickup vehicle fell into a 200-foot-deep gorge, while three people were seriously injured. He also added that all of them were Nepalese residents, except for Rajendra Kumar, who was driving the vehicle. He was of Indian origin.
According to the officials, the officers from Betalghat police station reached the spot as soon as they got information about the incident. They conducted a search and rescue operation with the help of local people in the area. The bodies of all eight victims were pulled out of the trench after the rescue and search operation. According to the official report, the police stated that, late in the night, 10 labourers from Mallagaon in Unchakot were going towards Haldwani after finishing their work. During this time, their vehicle went out of control and fell into a ditch more than 200 feet deep, in which eight people died on the spot.
