AIMIM president Asaduddin owaisi on Monday claimed that Assam cabinet’s decision to repeal muslim marriage act is aimed to distance mulims from their religion and religious practices.
The AIMIM leader slammed BJP governmnemt of asam for taking major decision to repeal the state’s 89-year-old muslim marriage and divorce registration act of 1935. Under this act, the government granted licenses to Muslim leaders, known as Kazis,to formally register these unions and dissolutions. The kazis acted as authorised registrars, deemed public servants. The law enabled Muslim couples to apply them for marriage and divorce registration per the procedures outlined. Importantly, the Act aligned with Muslim personal law traditions.
There is no religion in the special marriage act which is neutral, secular law, stated by Owaisi. The wedding should happpen as per one’ religion, he added.
Owasai argued whether ‘Mehr’ which is given to bride in Muslim marriage is a loss to a women or not.
“If marriage is registered under special marriage act, inheritance will not be available under Muslim personal law. The purpose is to distance Muslims from their religion and their religious practices” said by him.
