In a distressing incident that occurred on March 1 in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, all 8 individuals involved in the gangrape of a 28-year-old Brazilian motorcyclist have been apprehended, as reported by Jharkhand police sources. The survivor, alongside her Spanish husband, faced not only sexual assault but also physical violence, with the assailants allegedly taking turns to rape the woman and assaulting her husband with a helmet.
Contrary to one of the accused’s claims of being a minor, the police have refuted this assertion, confirming that all accused individuals are between 19 and 24 years of age. The survivor, who holds a Spanish passport, and her husband were camping near Hansdiha market when the assailants noticed them and planned the attack. The couple had set up a tent in a forested area, approximately 2 kilometers from the main road, intending to leave the next morning. They had been traveling across India since July, en route to Nepal via Bhagalpur.
The assault took place between 7.30 pm and 10 pm, some 50 meters from the couple’s tent in the nearby bushes. The accused allegedly robbed the couple of Rs 10,000, a watch, and rings during the horrifying incident. After the assault, the couple managed to stop a police patrol vehicle, which promptly took them to a hospital.
On Tuesday, the Jharkhand administration provided Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the survivors, acknowledging the trauma they endured. The police are currently verifying the criminal records of the accused, with no previous cases reported as of now. Sources reveal that the accused individuals, unemployed residents of nearby villages, targeted the couple after noticing them in the isolated location.
The survivor shared her gratitude on social media for the efficient and swift response of the police, emphasizing the need for justice not just for herself but for all women who have faced similar traumatic experiences. Her plea highlights the importance of addressing broader issues concerning the safety of travelers, particularly in remote areas.
