Science and mathematics should be introduced as mandatory subjects in school curricular in order to increase trend of science and mathematics education in the state. Therefore, science and mathematics will be mandatory subjects in school from 2025 according to Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma.
Sangma has stated that the new curriculum will be flexible to accommodate students of all abilities and meet the ideal inclusive standards thus, for effective learning; he mentioned this on the sidelines of the National Science Day at the State Convention Centre, today.
“We will create a curriculum that will suit the weak, ordinary, brilliant, and outstanding students. We will create a curriculum that will have no detrimental impact on any of our pupils at any level,” Sangma declared.
As per the prescribed policy by MBoSE in 2016, a student must obtain ‘majority’ (5 out of 6) marks in SSLC exams. He/She is marked either pass or fail depending if he/she met the criterion despite if he failed a math or science subject.
Also, the Minister had announced three science and mathematics focused projects in an attempt to improve Meghalaya’s educational atmosphere.
Examples of this include ‘Queen’s Gambit’, leveraging chess that helps for critical thinking and abilities development, ‘Meghalaya Star 30’ that probide coaching for National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), and Tech Tutor the platform for science and mathematics through virtual classrooms.
The event, SCSTE in collaboration with Shillong Science Centre and the science Department of college of Shillong, celebrated National Science Day 2024 on Viksit bharat topic through the theme ‘indigenous technology for viksit bharat.’
The programme included the presence of different dignitaries including Sampath Kumar who is the Principal Secretary & Developmental Commissioner and Gunanka D B who is the Joint Secretary, Planning Department and MEMBER secretary, SCSTE, Meghalaya.
While the ceremony was going on the school organized to recognize students who demonstrated excellence in science, technology, and math in the MBoSE Exams for both of 2022 and 2023 academic years.
