Apollo Cancer Centre in Chennai (ACC) has set a surgical milestone by executing South Asia’s first robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Using robotic technology, the surgeons skillfully extracted the entire breast through discreet incisions, maintaining the nipple intact and preserving the patient’s aesthetic appearance. The procedure, led by renowned oncologist Dr. Venkat P and Dr. Priya Kapoor, signifies a remarkable breakthrough in breast cancer surgery.
A 37-year-old woman from Assam with breast cancer and a BRCA1 gene mutation underwent a double mastectomy and preventive removal of her ovaries. To preserve her appearance and enhance her quality of life after treatment, a nipple-sparing mastectomy was performed, which aims to maintain a significant body marker for women and foster a more positive post-surgery experience.
Surgeons followed established guidelines to perform a successful surgery. After chemotherapy, the patient chose to have both breasts removed and her ovaries removed as a precaution. They then performed an advanced robotic surgery called “Robotic Nipple Sparing Mastectomy (NSM) with Risk-Reducing Oophorectomy.” This surgery used small incisions and the benefits of robotic technology. Udipti Barua (name changed) said, “The doctors at Apollo Cancer Centre helped me recover quickly so I could get back to my usual life within a week of a life-changing surgery. Dr. Venkat and his team helped me get my life back with my pride intact, keeping my natural appearance while overcoming cancer. Now, I feel stronger and more hopeful.”
Dr. Venkat P, an expert breast surgeon at ACC Chennai, praises the advancements brought by robotic breast surgeries. Specifically, he highlights the benefits of robotic-assisted bilateral mastectomy, an innovative technique that preserves the natural shape of the breast while removing cancer. This technique improves visualization, reduces blood loss, and enhances the accuracy of the surgery. The patient made a quick recovery and was able to be discharged within 24 hours after the procedure, showcasing the efficiency and effectiveness of robotic breast surgery.
Dr. Priya Kapoor, a Surgical Oncology specialist at ACC Chennai, explained that the new procedure involves making discreet incisions to remove the entire breast while also maximizing the chances of preserving sensation in the breast skin and nipple. The technique is groundbreaking as it maintains the nipple, skin, and breast’s shape even after surgery. The implementation of this innovative method aims to optimize cosmetic outcomes and enhance patients’ post-operative quality of life.
Dr. Preetha Reddy, a leader at Apollo Hospitals, voiced her excitement about a breakthrough achievement. She praised the robotic surgery team led by Drs. Venkat and Priya for performing South Asia’s first robotic bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy using the Da Vinci Xi system. This successful surgery marks the launch of RoBreas, India’s top robotic breast surgery program. It sets a high standard for surgical excellence and demonstrates how cutting-edge technology and compassionate care can enhance cancer treatment.
