Deepfake has been an emerging part of our lives ever since the evolution of technology and accessibility to create unreal things with the development of artificial intelligence. Bollywood Celebrity, Nora Fatehi fell pray to deepfake video. Several other celebrities like Katrina Kaif, Sachin Tendulkar and Alia Bhatt have been victim of the same in the past. These situations make us wonder if the latest developments are for the betterment of the society or are new mediums to cause problems?
On Saturday, Nora Fatehi reposted an advertisement on her Instagram Story. The post was orginally shared by a fashion brand, Lulumelon on their official handle. The advertisement featured a woman resembling Nora Fatehi. She was promoting the brand and endorsing the end of the season sale. On coming across the post, Nora Fatehi expressed her concern on the AI-Replica and said “SHOCKED!!! This is not me!”.
The deepfake video showcases AI Nora Fatehi endorsing the brand. The video is remarkably accurate which makes it extremely difficult to distinguish it from authentic content. The replica acts and sounds exactly like the victim. The video is so real that it might as well make a person rethink if they actually were involved in such an endorsement or brand promotion. Creation of explicit images and videos has become very common.
Allegedly, Delhi Police has arrested a man named Eemani Navin in the case of creation of deepfakes. He was involved in making similar content of another Bollywood Actress. Eemani’s account received a lot of attention especially from Celebrities protesting against his content. This made him immediately delete all his posts and relevant data to prevent the Police from tracing him. Despite his constant efforts, he was caught.
Hemant Tiwari, DCP IFSO said “We filed the case after complaint receiving the complainant from Delhi Commission of Women (DCW ). More than 500 social media accounts were scanned by our teams. And they went to Several states. Finally accused ‘E Navin’ was arrested from Guntirdist of Andhra Pradesh. Navin has done B.Tech from Chennai. He has done course from Google garange and done several social media courses,”.
