Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to lift the hijab ban. This is a major explanation for this development in his state’s educational system. Cold tongue, hot lips The chief minister also turned to X platform and said he had personally instructed officials that they should repeal the hijab ban. In taking them apart further Siddaramaiah was blunt about what he thinks is wrong with ordinary Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politics-that it creates divisions based on clothing, dress, caste barriers …
The controversy of Hijab Ban
This controversy erupted in January with the governance of a pre-university college at Udupi by its students wearing hijabs. The BJP government then placed the entire state under a blanket ban. February saw large student protests and clashes orchestrated by various groups taking place in its wake. Therefore, when the Karnataka High Court issued its interim order in February this year which permitted colleges to resume classes but required students not be allowed to wear any religious clothing.
Meanwhile, in the legal arena, on March 15th this year, Karnataka High Court confirmed that wearing the hijab is not compulsory Muslim doctrine and supported state government policy to ban students ‘wearing it. But then the decision was appealed before the Supreme Court, which on October 13 last year rendered a split verdict. It was then decided to refer the matter to the Chief Justice of India for assignment to a larger bench.
Elusive hijab Siddaramaiah’s announcement is nothing less than a turning point in the same argument. In a recent public speech he also emphasized that the great thing about personal choice–that is, it’s up to you if you want to wear this shirt or eat some of those food. If others don’t like what I do, who cares? That being so-how can people vote for someone just because they are Chinese without giving any thought at all to how much freedom they have
The question of whether or not to lift the ban on hijabs was a long-pending issue that resulted in protests and court cases. In easing restrictions, the chief minister has brought this debate finally to an end much appreciated by many people. This illustrates that in a plural society, we should respect personal choices and overcome boundaries of political affiliation.
