In Noida, call centre employees were arrested on Thursday for scamming Foreigners. 25 Workers were arrested upon being STF busted for Cyber-Crime. The call-centre is located at D Block of Sector-59. The scammers were caught red-handed at their office’s headquarters during a Joint-Operation conducted by STF (Special Task Force) and Sector-58 Police Station.
The workers represented themselves as employees of Private-Companies. They approached the victims to resolve their tech-related problems. They would make the Foreigners, including US nationals believe that their internet protocol (IP) was compromised. The accused promised the victims that they would resolve their issues. The call-centre employees then proceeded to install ‘Any Desk’ application on the victim’s computer system. Then they would take payment in the form of gift cards ranging between $100 and $500 to lead online brands.
The scammers have been identified as Jayant Lal, Manik Siwach, Mohd Sabir, Shiva Kashyap, Mohit Grover, Divyam Sharma, Saksham Malhotra, Adil Rizvi, Ritika Malhotra, Rohit Yadav, Mohit Bhardwaj, Ankur Soni, Kailash Shahi, Firoz Alam, Bhupendra Singh Yadav, Yudhishtir Kumar, Afroz Khan, Gautam Sehgal, Manish Tiwari, Anubhav Tyagi, Yash Makkad, Chandrapal Singh, Nadeem, Sanjeet and Neeraj Yadav.
An FIR has been filed under the Indian Penal Code Sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 467, 468 and 471 (all related to forgery) and under the Information Technology Act. Police Investigation is ongoing. Several people linked with the Cyber Fraud are absconding but they have been identified. Immediate action is being taken against the accused.
About 65,983 Cases of Cyber Crime were filed in 2022. These statistics presented by the Hindustan Times cite an increase in the number of cybercrime cases since 2021. Despite constant efforts being made by introducing firmer laws to reduce cyber crime, we observe a 24.4 percent rise in it. This makes a person believe that nothing can stop people from performing criminal activities.
