The incident occurred on 12 March in a village called Harugoppa close to Bailhongal in the district of Belagavi of the Karnataka State when a man identified to be Beerappa broke the leg of his wife named Mayakka as she attempted to put a stop to her underage daughter’s wedding.
According to witnesses, the man beat Mayakka until her leg was broken and she bled. The people around were quick to take her to a hospital and she is currently undergoing treatment.
It was found that Beerappa and Mayakka have a 13-year-old daughter and Beerappa wanted to marry her off to a man in relation to the wife of his elder brother whose father was the owner of 40 acres of land.
Mayakka was against this marriage as her daughter was a minor and she wished for her daughter to study and not get married as she was a teenager. Mayakka warned Beerappa as well regarding the man and his rumoured mental health issues.
However, Beerappa paid her no mind which resulted in a fight that further gave way to a physical assault on Mayakka. The police have thus far registered a complaint and FIR.
