NEW DELHI: Police in eastern railway arrested three men for the alleged gang rape of a foreign tourists and assault of her husband , as they investigate for four more suspects in case that highlight country’s decades-long struggle to crub sexual violence against women.
The couple was traveling by motorcycle from state of West Bengal to neighbouring Nepal found late by police on Friday on patrol , said Pitambar Singh Kherwar , superintendent of Dumka district of Jharkhand State.
The police took them to hospital where the woman disclosed that she was raped Pitamber said.
Police know the identity of the alleged suspects and formed a special investigation team , Kherwar said that it’s unclear that the three arrested suspects have leagal representation. Haqiqi News is not disclosing the name of female victim according to the Indian law that prevents naming victims of sexual violence. The police has not disclosed the nationality of the tourist couple.
The arrest was done after a vlogger couple on Saturday posted ” knives (held) to our throat” during an attack in India. The woman has been raped and brought to the hospital for DNA tests, they said.
The couple posted in Spanish and the victim woman disclosed in her Instagram that she’s “Brazilian”. On Instagram stories the woman showed bruises on her face saying ” this is what my face looks like but it isn’t what hurts the most, I thought I was going to die “.
On Sunday in a follow-up post the couple thanked their followers for their support saying they were doing well and “the police is doing everything that is possible to get to the end of the case and punish the real victim”
NCW (National Commission for Women) chairperson Rekha Sharma has spoken with the victims and extended all required assistance , the organisation posted on social platforms X on Saturday.
Jharkhand minister Mithilesh Kumar Thakur called the alleged assault as “condemnable incident”. “If the crime has been committed the culprits will not be spared ” he said on Saturday.
