On Tuesday, a man has been sentenced for second-degree murder. Allegedly, he shot a young-lady in 2023 as she drove up his rural driveway in Upstate New York. The offender has been identified as 66-Year Old Kevin Monahan. The victim, 20-Year Old Kaylin Gillis pulled into Kevin’s long, curving driveway close to Vermont Border. She and her friends were searching for another house.
When they realised they pulled up to the wrong house, they started leaving. The friend’s group had two caravans and one motorcycle. According to statements released by the authorities, Kevin came out on his porch and fired twice from his shotgun. The second shot hit Kaylin in the neck. She was sitting in the front passenger seat of a SUV driven by her boyfriend.
During the trial, Kevin and his attorney referred to another case of shooting which was caused due to a defective gun. This happened in the rural town of Hebron. The accused expressed his perception and explained that he thought his house was ‘under-siege’ due to the revving cars and motorcycles. He wanted to fire a warning shot to make the supposed attackers aware that he had a weapon.
He stated that the second shot was unintentional and that the gun went out of control. Kevin stated that he tripped over nails sticking out, he lost balance and the shotgun struck his deck. “I didn’t mean to shoot the second shot,” said the offender. Assistant District Attorney, Christian Morris said “He acted out of anger. That’s the only thing that can be inferred from shooting at people within 90 seconds of being on his property,”. Evidence was presented indicating that Kevin was fast asleep when the Police arrived.
This act of violence and intimidation showcases no consideration of human life and lack of awareness of ‘how to live’. If only one could open fire and scare off bullies all the time, things would have been so much more easier. Assuming is one of the biggest mistake committed by all of us. The accused assumed he was in trouble without knowing the actual situation. Even if he was threatened, he should have contacted 911 rather than open firing.
